There are about three billion people who use Facebook every month, and it makes sense that some of them, whether for privacy reasons or whim, might not always want to use their real name. Or maybe they've changed their name. Whatever the reason, there are a couple of ways you can get this done.

What to know before changing your name

Before you go ahead with your name change, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Facebook has a few rules under their name standards. Names on the platform cannot have the following:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation

  • Characters from multiple languages

  • Titles of any kind (example: professional, religious)

  • Words or phrases in place of a name

  • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind

As for what is allowed, Facebook suggests that the name on your profile should be the name your friends or family calls you in real life and should also somewhat match the name that appears on your ID, which Facebook might ask for to verify your account if you have issues accessing your account. Nicknames can be used as first or middle names, as long as they are a variation of your actual name, such as Alex instead of Alexander or Becca in place of Rebecca. Another thing to keep in mind is that you can only change your name on Facebook every 60 days.
